In the cup

Green apple, lemongrass and green tea, with gentle acidity and a juicy mouthfeel. These notes are from the supplier's description; we will add the results of our own cupping to this page as soon as we have them.

Fully Washed

After the fruit is removed, the sticky mucilage around the bean is washed off with water before drying. It is said to be the method that shows the character of the bean itself most plainly (more in Washed).

About Laos

Laos is one of the Southeast Asian countries that grow coffee. Coffee was brought in by the French in the 1900s.

Annual production is roughly 20,000 to 30,000 tonnes, though figures vary between sources. Most of it is Robusta, and the rest is Arabica and Liberica. Almost all of the coffee is grown in traditional ways by smallholder farmers.

Lao coffee has drawn more attention in recent years, and lots scoring above 80 points are no longer rare. Lao Arabica is known for citrus aromas reminiscent of orange and lemon and a gentle acidity, which make it very easy to drink.

About Typica

Typica is one of the two Arabica varieties the French first brought to Laos for trial planting (more in Typica).

After the First and Second World Wars, however, the French abandoned the coffee farms. Lao farmers later took up growing it again, but without good results. The varieties the French had brought were gradually replaced by Catimor, which resists disease better and grows well.

Even so, Typica is still grown in Laos today. The volume is small, but its quality is excellent.
